Visiting the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco: A Must-Do for Disney Fans

SAN FRANCISCO

Hey Strangers, we’re Jake & Georgia

If you’re a Disney lover planning a trip to San Francisco, make sure a visit to the Walt Disney Family Museum is on your list. Tucked inside the scenic Presidio, this museum offers one of the most inspiring and emotional Disney experiences we’ve ever had. We’ve done everything from touring Walt’s apartment in Disneyland to visiting his birthplace in Chicago, and this felt like the missing piece in the story.

We first tried to visit during our 2023 West Coast road trip, but discovered (too late) that it’s closed on certain weekdays. On this trip, after riding the Coast Starlight train down from Seattle, we finally made it happen. We booked ahead, arrived early, and spent hours soaking it all in. If you’re looking for unique things to do in San Francisco or a meaningful stop for any Disney fan, this place belongs at the top of your itinerary.

Why Visit the Walt Disney Family Museum?

The Walt Disney Family Museum takes you on a journey through Walt’s life. You’ll learn how he grew up, built a career in animation, took massive creative risks, and ultimately changed the world through storytelling, film, and the creation of Disneyland. It’s not just a look at his legacy. It’s an honest and deeply human story of persistence, vision, and imagination.

Located in the heart of the Presidio of San Francisco, the setting is just as beautiful as the exhibits. Surrounded by tree-lined walkways and views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the museum feels peaceful, creative, and full of charm. It’s easily one of our favourite parts of the city.

Booking Tickets and Best Time to Visit

We booked our tickets online in advance and chose the first available time slot of the day. It was a great choice. The museum started off quiet and peaceful, and gradually got busier through the morning. We recommend booking early, especially on weekends or holidays.

Plan to spend at least two hours inside. We thought we would be there for two, but we stayed for four. There is a lot to see, and you’ll want to take your time.

What You’ll See Inside the Museum

The museum is laid out as a timeline through Walt Disney’s life. It begins with his early childhood in the Midwest and leads through his first animation projects, the creation of Mickey Mouse, the launch of Snow White, his move into live action films, and eventually, the design of Disneyland.

We were especially drawn to the first few rooms about his early life, since we visited Walt’s birthplace in Chicago in 2023 and had a private tour. Seeing those same moments reflected here made it feel more personal.

If you love theme parks like we do, the Disneyland section will be your highlight. The scale model is incredible and the story behind its creation gave us goosebumps. You’ll also find rare photos, vintage film equipment, original animation drawings, and handwritten letters from Walt himself.

Interactive Exhibits and Creative Touches

This is not a typical museum where you just look at things behind glass. There are interactive features that show off Walt’s innovation and creativity. You can control a Tiki Bird animatronic to see how early Disney technology worked, explore the animation process with hands-on exhibits, and even see a working multi-plane animation camera.

These elements are great for adults and kids alike. They make the experience more dynamic and fun, especially for anyone curious about how animation and theme park technology evolved.

Can You Take Photos or Film Inside?

Yes. You are allowed to take photos and video inside the museum. We filmed our full experience for our YouTube channel, and only needed to be careful not to record other visitors. If you are a content creator or just want to remember the visit, you will have plenty of opportunities to capture the magic.

Conclusion

For us, this museum felt like the perfect wrap-up to everything we’ve experienced on our Disney journey so far. We’ve toured Walt’s studio lot with D23, visited his apartment above the Disneyland fire station, and stood in the room where he was born. This museum pulled it all together.

As creatives and lifelong Disney fans, we left feeling inspired and emotional. Walt’s story is a reminder of how powerful imagination can be when paired with perseverance. If you are planning a visit to San Francisco and want to include something meaningful and a little magical, the Walt Disney Family Museum is absolutely worth it.
