A food review of Virgin Voyages’ restaurants.

VIRGIN VOYAGES

HEY STRANGERS!

Virgin Voyages is a new cruise line, started under the Virgin brand, headed by Richard Brandson. The company launched their first ship during a difficult time for the cruise industry, something we would soon realise.

We wrote a blog recently about our slightly, unique, cruise onboard Scarlet Lady so we won’t go into detail about that chaotic sailing right now. If you want to read about that, click here.

Our cruise was onboard a trial and repositioning cruise, getting the ship over to Miami. Although we didn’t experience Virgin’s current cruise itineraries, we were able to sample most of the entertainment, amenities and dining options.

FOOD

Virgin Voyages have some incredible inclusions with the price of your cruise, including all food and non-alcoholic drinks, entertainment and crew tips! Luckily, with these wonderful additions, they have curated a unique and broad range of dining opportunities on board with over 20 eateries.

The modern company has also removed some cruise line staples such as buffets and set meal times (first and second seatings in a dining room), instead opting for a more casual, restaurant approach where you choose where you eat and when you dine. The restaurants on board have their own distinct design, atmosphere and cuisine.

Jake has always been a very picky eater and (thankfully) this cruise awoke something in him. Whilst on-board he was concerned about the menus and struggling to find something for his ‘special’ pallet. What he found is that each restaurant had dishes that ranged from tame to adventurous and with all of the meals included in the cost, he was able to try things he didn’t expect to like and discovered he LOVED them!

PINK AGAVE

Pink Agave, the ship’s up scale Mexican restaurant served up enhanced street style food with modern Mexican aesthetics. The guacamole and chips was an incredible way to start; It was clear that the avocados were extremely fresh and mixing in the pomegranate seeds added a sweet pop of flavour, leaving us wanting more! We thoroughly enjoyed the chicken quesadilla and burrito for our mains but the guac continued to steal the show over and over with each refill. The drinks were delicious, tequila (because what else would you drink in a Mexican restaurant?) cocktails went down like juice… dangerous!

RAZZLE DAZZLE

Razzle Dazzle was possibly one of my favourite places to eat on the ship, but breakfast is my favourite meal of the day so I may be a little bias. We went for brunch, to start they give you a plate of little pastries to tide you over until your mains which were irresistible despite me trying to save myself for my watermelon pizza. You heard that right, watermelon pizza, a big slice of watermelon, topped with yogurt, fruit and granola, in other words delicious! As much as I loved my watermelon, I still managed to get food envy over Jake’s Fairy Toast, so I got that the next time…

THE WAKE

We visited The Wake twice on our voyage, first for dinner and then again for breakfast. I have to say, breakfast was the superior meal for me, although the deserts at dinner definitely deserve an honorary mention. The steaks were delicious and it’s not everyday you get to eat steaks for breakfast with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic from the stern of a brand new cruise ship. The wake is also where I tried my first Manhattan cocktail, I was trying to be funny by “sipping a Manhattan whilst sailing to Manhattan” but that went down as well as docking in NYC did… in other words, it didn’t.

GUNBAE

Gunbae was such a fun and unique experience, the Korean BBQ restaurant serves your food onto a large teppanyaki style grill. Whilst you wait for your food, your server plays drinking games with you making the energy in the room chaotic in the best way! We played a game called “Sam Yuk Gu” or Three Six Nine, in which you count around the table, clapping on each number that has three, six or nine until you eventually (inevitably) mess up and take a shot of Soju.

THE TEST KITCHEN

Well, what can we say about The Test Kitchen, it’s definitely an experience. This experimental onboard eatery serves six courses, each individually designed around a specific ingredient. For us, our menu simply read “Mushroom, Egg, Scallops, Venison/Beef, Blue Cheese, Chocolate” and that’s as much information as you were going to get on what you were eating that night. My favourite course of the evening was the venison (Jake opted for beef) which was served with a beet puree, blueberries and chocolate! Not something I would ever whip up in the kitchen at home but delicious nonetheless!

EXTRA VIRGIN

Extra Virgin is the ship’s ‘elevated Italian’, they serve regionally inspired dishes with perfectly crafted, handmade pasta. We dined here our first night onboard and started the meal off with some fried calamari with caper aioli which was delicious! Jake then had the bucatini carbonara, I had the pappardelle al ragu, not very adventurous I know but it was our first night. After our mains, our waiter asked what we would like for dessert but we were positively stuffed! That didn’t stop our server from bringing out bowls of gelato though, so we found room in our full bellies and it was absolutely worth it.

THE GALLEY

The ship continues to offer many culinary delights beyond its main restaurants. The Galley is this ships buffet replacement. In a similar offering, you go up to individual stands, each offering different cuisines from sushi, desserts and my (Jake) personal favourite, the burger place! They make the smash patty burgers however you like and offer some classic burger toppings, sauces and amazing cheese. I also tried my first Impossible burger (because it was free) and found that it really was amazing! Not quite beef but it was a pleasant surprise and I’m not ashamed to admit I had more than one.

LICK ME ‘TIL ICE CREAM

This, umm, uniquely named ice cream parlour served up delicious flavours of everyone’s favourite frozen treat. They offered an array of different toppings like these sprinkles and, very on brand, red velvet cones! They also had vegan options for everyone to enjoy. The little stand is located in the main ’round about’ the ship’s atrium area. The best part is, it’s all free!

The ship had many other smaller bars and restaurants that we couldn’t cover them all in just one blog! From the elegant Sip champagne lounge to the Loose Cannon, seaside themed bar, and the Grounds Club coffee shop which makes a great latte and serves delicious pastries.
